Do-it-Yourself Maple Sugaring is a multidisciplinary curriculum designed as an educational supplement to the book Maple Sugar from sap to syrup: the history, lore, and how-to behind this sweet treat, by Tim Herd. (Storey Publishing) The book is available from the author and online booksellers. A Do-it-Yourself Tapping Kit, which is used for one of the major activities, is available only from the author.
While the students develop virtuous habits and many practical employment and life skills, they also follow the footsteps of both bygone and present maple syrup producers to learn the lore, tap the trees, secure the sap, separate the sugar, and taste the treat. This is a series in which they can truly enjoy the fruits of their labor: sweet!
Students from 9 years old to those in high school can follow the footsteps of both bygone and present maple syrup producers, learning how to tap the trees, secure the sap, separate the sugar, and taste the treat themselves —and developing virtuous habits and many practical employment and life skills along the way.
